Are you thinking, “Thank goodness it’s over!” or are you concerned for what next year may bring? Wherever you find yourself, take a moment to review the past year as we prepare to step into the next. Let’s consciously leave behind what didn’t serve us and carry forward what did.
Personally, I’m ready to say goodbye to 2024. It’s been another year of significant life changes - some terrific highs and plenty of challenging lows. Like many, I’m looking forward to a brighter and better 2025.
One tradition I find grounding is a year-end pause. Reflecting on the year helps me process changes, appreciate where I am, and refocus my goals for the future. This practice isn’t just about looking back—it’s also about moving forward with intention and purpose.
Why Reflect?Taking time to reflect offers several meaningful benefits. It allows us to process our experiences, learn from the past, and prepare for the future. Here’s what reflection can bring:
- Improved emotional intelligence: Better understanding of your emotions and how they affect you.
- Celebrating accomplishments: Boosts well-being by recognizing your progress and wins.
- Empathy for challenges: Helps you accept failures and mistakes with grace.
- Clarity and purpose: Guides you toward what truly matters.
- Mindfulness and peace: Brings calm by putting the past into perspective.
- Lessons learned: Encourages growth through reflection.
- Emotional processing: Allows you to digest the events of the year and leave them in the past.
How to Reflect on the YearNot sure where to begin? Start by finding a quiet space and revisiting key moments of the year through your calendar, journal, or even your phone’s photo gallery.
As a coach, I guide my clients through year-end reflections, which they often find transformative. Here are some questions that resonate deeply with them—and may inspire your own reflection. Here is a How To article for more support.
Reflection Questions
General Questions:
- If your year had a title or theme what would it be?
- What major events defined your year?
- Who have I met this year?
- What worked well?
- What didn’t work?
- What gives me positive energy?
- What drains my positive energy?
- What do I want more of?
- What do I want less of?
Deeper Questions:
- What was I most proud of?
- What valuable lessons did I learn?
- What challenges did I face?
- What new habits have I developed?
- What have I let go of?
Make Reflection a Ritual
Reflection doesn’t have to be rushed. Take your time, let the process unfold naturally, and approach it with an open mind. By reflecting on the year’s journey, you’ll not only gain insight but also enter the new year with a clear and purposeful mindset.
Bonus Burning Ritual
Many great traditions have a burning ritual at the end of the year. The idea is that you leave behind what you don’t want to hold on to or bring into the new year.
A simple version is to write these down on small pieces of paper. Then in a safe place light the fire in a fire pit, bowl, something fire proof and safe. Place the papers into the fire. Next watch them burn allowing yourself to feel whatever arises. Offer a word of release, I’m letting go of …, I am open to…, I am healed, blessed and at peace is a nice way to end. Lastly, extinguish the fire safely. If you like when ashes are cooled you can blow them, scatter or dispose them safely away from you and your dwelling.
Now you’re ready to move into the new year with your wants, needs and desires for the new year. Take a moment to capture those thoughts.
