Ironically, I was all jazzed up in November and December with my new planner that I designed and couldn’t wait to start using it in 2025. Now, I am struggling with change and inertia. Yup, you heard that right, the change and resilience coach is struggling with change and not feeling very motivated. Meh. The theme for this week.
Here I am with my new pretty purple floral planner that I took an enormous time to design and produce and I’m struggling with it. It’s new and it’s not my old type of planner. How do I make this work? I’ve been laughing out loud – the change coach is digging in her heels and whining about her own planner that she designed to have all the things clients and I wanted.
First, when you have a change and lack of motivation it’s normal. Our brains don’t like to change. Especially a habit or something you’ve been doing for a long while.
So, what does one do when they had high hopes and aren’t feeling it? How can you overcome inertia and change? Here are some tips that are mostly working.
Tips for overcoming change and inertia – get momentum working for you.
1. Allow the feelings and get curios about them. No judgement.
a. Hmm, what’s this about?
b. Is there something else going on?
c. It’s normal to feel like this.
For me, yes, cedar (ashe juniper) season is here and I feel snuffy, itchy eyes, cruddy and tired. I’m taking all of the meds I can & holistic remedies as well. I had a jam packed fun filled holiday break with my eldest and grands. Also, this planner is a major change to how I’ve been doing my planning and calendaring for several years. Lots of things going on to acknowledge. I’m tired, don’t feel great, and my organization system is a major change. It’s OK to feel the meh and less enthused.
2. Consider what might be the root cause of the lack of motivation
a. Have you had enough sleep? That was an issue at first, now I’m feeling well rested.
b. Is there something else going on?
c. Is there a fear of failure, regret, lack of interest, burnout, or …?
For me, overwhelm was what I identified – too much to do at one time and I wasn’t feeling up to the task. Too many new changes, too much to organize and clean up.
3. What are your blockers or obstacles?
a. Identify what is keeping you stuck
b. What is in your way of making progress?
c. Do you need resources or something else?
d. How can you mitigate or remove those blockers?
Blocker- tired – get rest, take naps, allow the mess to be there. New planner – it’s OK to start planning after I feel better so I waited and let it sit. That was hard for me
4. Start with Small Steps
a. What small thing can you do that would help move you forward?
b. Pick something and do it
I opened my planner and started with some goals for January. I skipped over the larger planning and vision board for now.
I next listed my to do’s for the week and I have checked off and added to my to done list already! I can feel the momentum building.
5. Set goals – SMART Goals (pg. 8 in my planner)
By this step I was starting to build momentum. It took a couple of days and yesterday, I wrote out 2 weekly goals for week 1 in my planner (pg. 16 in my planner)
Goal 1 – organize and plan January by Tues. 1/7 – it felt good to do fill in the progress bar.
Goal 2 – back on track with movement – walk 3-4 days/week (depending on weather- not going out in ice/sleet), rowing machine 1-2 days. Starting small & achievable.
6. Take Action
When we take action we are overcoming inertia and starting our momentum. By making a to do list, staring with some goals, I had started the process. https://www.boldfulfilledlifecoach.com/blog/knocked-down-get-up-and-take-action
Do something anything.
7. Routine is your friend
a. Design a routine that works for you. Start small.
I will review my planner to dos daily and choose 1-3 to do.
b. Pick a time and place to help the routine stick.
I will do my review each morning in my office w/some yummy coffee or tea.
(See how I added something self-care and fun in there)
8. Acknowledge & Celebrate – your wins – small or large
a. When we take time to acknowledge and celebrate our wins our brains want to do more of this.
If you have my planner, you can use the To Done’s list to start acknowledging what you’ve done or start your own To Done list. Celebrate you completed a task!
I’m jamming to some new Portugal. The Man Bill got for us as a nice lil celebration.
My wish for you is that you find your 2025 rhythm and work towards momentum for the things you desire in 2025.
I’m working towards finding more momentum as the days progress and I continue to knock off items off my To Do List and happily place them on my To Done list. I am almost ready to do the deeper work of intentions and goals for 2025 and do more goal setting. To Done blog. :)
I have space for two clients in January. If that’s you or someone you know please contact me. Let’s have a conversation to see how I can be of support.
Latest client wins – “Thank you for listening and being there to help me realize I didn’t really want to make changes in anger.”, “Thank you for coaching me with dealing with employee performance reviews for a better result.”

Peace, and blessings,
