Remember your intentions and goals for 2025 - they are what you wanted. I want to encourage you to take action on your goals.
We all know about the traditional to-do list—a never-ending compilation of tasks we want to complete. While to-do lists are great for organizing our workload, they can also feel overwhelming, leaving us stressed about what’s left undone. Many clients have multiple to do lists and sticky notes and feel stuck. I love introducing them to the To Done List. To Do’s are a system that works for some but not everyone. If that’s you a To Done list may be the productivity hack to turn tasks into actions.
Try flipping the script. A "To-Done" List—a simple yet powerful method to boost motivation and recognize progress.
What is a To-Done List?
A "To-Done" list is the opposite of a to-do list. Instead of tracking what our to dos, tasks, what we want to do, a To Done list records what you have already accomplished. This practice helps shift your mindset from focusing on what’s missing to celebrating what you’ve completed.
I’ve been regularly utilizing the To Done List in my planner. I’ve discovered on days when I feel like I didn’t really do much that in fact I have accomplished more than I thought. It’s been a life saver during times of low motivation to see that task moved from To Do to To Done. I can also testify it does increase momentum. “Hey, I did that thing, what other thing could I do?” - thinking kicks in.
Why a To-Done List Works (so many benefits)
- Encourages a Positive Mindset – By recognizing achievements, you cultivate a sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep going.
- Boosts Motivation – Reflecting on accomplishments can be a powerful reminder of how much you’re capable of.
- Reduces Overwhelm – Traditional to-do lists can be daunting. A to-done list shifts the focus to progress rather than pressure.
- Builds Momentum – Seeing a record of completed tasks creates a sense of progress, making it easier to tackle new challenges.
- Increases Self-Accountability – Keeping track of completed work helps identify patterns in productivity and areas for improvement.
- Ready Made Status Report - If you need a status report for work or want to see what you’ve accomplished in life a To Done list completes this for you.
- Enhances Reflection and Growth – Reviewing past successes helps identify strengths and areas for improvement, leading to continuous development.
- Provides a Sense of Closure – Completing tasks and acknowledging them can create a sense of fulfillment and reduce stress.
- Start Small – At the end of each day, write down what you’ve completed, no matter how minor. You’ll be surprised how much you do.
- Use a Dedicated Space – Whether it's a notebook, a notes app, or a whiteboard, keep your list visible. If you’ve got my 2025 Planner - there’s a weekly To Done list for each week.
- Reflect and Celebrate – Take time to appreciate your progress and use it as motivation for the next day.
- Pair It with a To-Do List – Using both together helps you plan ahead while appreciating past efforts. I find the two are motivational and I’m getting more and more accomplished each week.
- Bonus Categorize Tasks – If you want to go deeper, break accomplishments into categories for example; work, personal, and learning achievements.
So, why not start today with a To Done List?
Write down what you’ve accomplished, embrace your success, and move forward with confidence! Watch your motivation grow!
