A couple weeks ago I posted about Resiliency in Action.
I want to check in with you first.
How are you doing building resiliency?
- Did you try one thing that was uncomfortable and hard?
- Maybe you worked on a skill to build resiliency?
- I’d love to hear from you. Let’s build resiliency together.
The win
A messy win - where I worked to build resiliency and stretch myself into and through discomfort over the last week.
The back story. I’ll be in Florida on vacation with my sister visiting dad in memory care for Father’s Day. I thought, hey, maybe I can do a couple of book signings too & get Soul Love out to more people.
First, researched independent bookstores & places that were potential options. Next, emailed my request and media kit and waited & waited.
Nothing - zero replies.
Crickets …
I was sick with a sinus infection and felt crummy. The negative self-talk crept in. Saying things like, “I’m sure they didn’t want a nobody like you. You with your self-published story in their store, ha ha, I knew it, why did I bother, blah blah blah”.
I even began to see them as snobs and elitists in some cases. Starting to feel sorry and I was very whiny about everything. Then, I realized I was pretty sick and just being a whiny gal. So, I gave up on the idea of doing books signings. Too tired & sick. Need sleep.
I could have stopped there & said forget it.
After some naps, doctor visit, and good self care, I starting thinking about my work and touting resiliency. I wasn’t practicing being resilient at all. I wasn't using any of the tools or things I've learned. Augh, I was in the old trap of negative self-talk and believing it! Again! Darn it!
I decided before my voice gave out 100% last week, I could make ONE phone call. Just one.
It wasn’t likely to kill me. I really was uncomfortable and had fears about doing this. I hauled out my big girl panties and wrote a little script to bolster myself. I picked up the phone and made a phone call to a bookstore I like & have visited before.
Guess what? She was nice & said no, I haven't seen your email. Send it again to my attention and we’ll look into it. Score! I was feeling pretty good. They didn’t get my email - maybe no one did ?
Feeling perked up, I called the next one my list - doo doo doo - this number has been disconnected- we are only online now - huh, dang, didn’t see that on their website.
Okay, next bookstore - no answer, left a message.
I was on a roll and thought to myself, you can do this, let’s make one more call. Be Resiliency In Action. I took a leap of faith to call what I thought was a snobby place - you know the website looked this way - all fancy and official looking. I made the call and someone answered and said they’d call me back in 5 minutes.
Tick, tick, tick. I sat there...15 minutes ticked by and I waited thinking, see, I knew they didn’t want you or your story. Snobby jerks....
Wait, here you go again, STOP! (that negative talk & do a little Remembrance. Breathe) Resiliency in Action again...
Just call back. they can blow you off on the phone or not pick up. So, I called again. All sunshine and nice ready to be let down or ignored.
Guess what? The lady apologized for not getting back to me sooner - she was helping an elderly customer. She was incredibly nice and patient. She then said, sure we can host a book signing. Then promptly asked me what day. Without ever seeing my book, media kit or really knowing much about me or my story!!! She even gave me some hints on better times & dates to book. She apologized again that she couldn’t do much of a press release since the notice was not over a month in advance!! She was just happy to help out a new author!!!! I was absolutely blown away! I couldn’t believe it – just one phone call and it made the difference! WIN!!!
This experience was a huge reminder!
1. You never know until you try.
2. Be BOLD & GO FOR IT!
3. Resiliency in Action Works!
It reminded me of the stories we tell ourselves and how absolutly untrue they can be. I was so far off on the store vibe and who they were. I’m really glad I didn’t give up and I had the perseverance to call. I kept reminding myself while I was making the calls, what harm could it do to just call? A no would mean less work for me and fewer books to haul across country. A yes would mean a book signing and chance to share my story. Either way it was all good.
So, what about you? What did you do this week that was a demonstration of resiliency and perseverance? Did you make just ONE call? Send an email? If not, what’s holding you back? You can do it!
