What is Life balance?
Balance a state of harmony or equilibrium where various aspects of our lives—such as work, relationships, health, leisure, and personal development are in alignment. It’s different at different stages and unique to you and your situation. What you find as balance maybe chaos to someone else. Only you know what balance is for you and your life right now.
Balance is something that needs regular adjustment as our priorities and circumstances change. It’s not about cutting your pie call life into equal pieces. Balance can be found by knowing your priorities and values and choosing how the rest of life works into these. Being intentional with choices and creating boundaries to protect our time and energy is one way to find balance. Ultimately, it’s about finding the right blend of work, play, relationships, and self-care that nourishes our overall well-being.
The Benefits of Life Balance:
Enhanced Well-Being: When we prioritize activities that nourish our minds, bodies, and souls, we feel more energized, focused, and fulfilled.
Reduced Stress: By avoiding burnout and overwhelm, life balance helps to mitigate stress and its harmful effects on our physical and mental health. When we have time for relaxation and rejuvenation, we're better equipped to handle life's challenges with grace and resilience.
Improved Relationships: Balance allows us to invest time and attention into our relationships. Whether it's spending quality time with loved ones, cultivating new connections, or nurturing meaningful relationships - balance enriches our lives and brings us joy.
Increased Productivity: Working and being busy for longer hours doesn't necessarily equate to greater productivity. It often leads to less productivity and errors. By prioritizing tasks and setting boundaries, we can accomplish more in less time.
Higher risk of anxiety and depression: When we’re consistently working long hours we’re taking a toll on our mental health well-being. When we’re in unbalance for a prolonged period of time we raise our chances for anxiety and depression.
How to recognize when we are out of balance
- Overworking – a regular schedule of over work, long hours, weekends, holidays. Can’t stop thinking or worrying about work?
- Strained Relationships – both personal and professionally. Are you irritated often? Do you tend to snip and snap at people? Finding you don’t want to be with people?
- Little personal life – no time for fun, hobbies, exercise, personal time for you.
- Self-care lacking – not taking good care of yourself, taking down time, doing things to support your well-being. Not getting enough sleep, unhealthy eating, no time for exercise or things you enjoy. Not taking sick time and time off.
- Feeling burned out– mental, physical and chronic stress can lead to burnout. Feeling meh about life, not motivated, exhausted, work isn’t fulfilling?
- Lack of boundaries between work and personal life – allowing yourself to always be on and ready for a work message or call, having your personal phone be a work device, working weekends when you are “supposed” to be off, working late nights frequently, not taking time off.
As a coach, I have the honor of supporting my clients as they break out of their unbalanced pattern of life and move into thriving balance. Society tells us we’ll be rewarded for “hard” work and tells us to keep doing this and it’s “normal”. Being busy and on the go is considered the norm and what we’re “supposed to do.” In fact, living like this is NOT normal, sustainable, nor healthy.
Seeking balance is normal and healthy.
