First, “Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings.” by Elizabeth Gilbert - this quote resonates with me.
It takes effort to cultivate, look, search, fight and sometimes travel to find happiness.
Second, on the flip side there’s this week’s Motivational Monday quote I shared on social media, “Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.” From Denis Waitley. I believe that this is also true.
Living in love, grace and gratitude daily can cultivate a deep sense of happiness and joy. This is a mindfulness happiness ritual that can also take work to develop and remember, especially in tough challenging times.
Which one resonates with you today?
We can’t always be happy and sometimes life hands up sorrows, upsets, disappointments and challenges. However, as darkness comes the sun also rises. In those dark places, we have to look hard and fight to find a glimmer of happiness.
When times get tough, a resiliency skill is to look forward to and plan for a happiness destination. This could be an uplifting song, yummy warm tea, cozy blanket, time outside, visiting a happy place either mentally or physically.
My most recent destination and cultivating happiness was our recent trip to Portugal. Bill & I had the opportunity to travel and visit this beautiful, friendly country. The planning of the trip was part of the fun. It also was part of the stress and anxiety. Planning the trip, myself (yes, that’s how I prefer to travel) was fun, exciting and sometimes stressful. In my previous tech young professional world, I traveled extensively to Europe. I know how to travel and love it - right??
I quickly realized that now in my 50’s with 3 autoimmune diseases, cracked bleeding feed w/psoriasis and achy body that international travel planning and execution were very different from my 20’s. I had moments of doubt and fear - could my body even make it. Would my feet heal enough to allow walking and seeing sights? Why was the planning, booking and organizing so much harder than before? How did I cope?
I leaned into my healing, healthy, happy theme and motto for the year. I WAS going to go on this trip and I WOULD be healthy enough feet and body wise to do it
Destination happiness - Atlantic Ocean breeze, European and Portuguese food. Seeing old friends, spending time on vacation with Bill, seeing God’s splendor and beauty sightseeing pure joy. Enjoying a once in a lifetime Eno-gastronomic food and wine/port perfectly paired dinner with Porto as the view. That was an over the top of multi-sensory happiness and out of this world adventure with my love.
Cultivate happiness when travel snafus happened - trains strike for the entire month. Dig deep into resilience – get rebooked for one train, book bus tickets and get refunds. During the wait for the last train – grab an Uber to see the Tower of Belem we originally wanted to see. God’s gift – a beautiful place with the most amazing violinist playing our favorite spiritual songs – Oceans Waves and Hallelujah.
Destination happiness - if travel is your jam. Plan it & do it. What a new fresh perspective I have from our travels. Revived, rejuvenated and in my happy place.
