Russell Grieger says it well, ““You accept that, as a fallible human being, you are less than perfect. You will often perform well, but you will also err at times… You always and unconditionally accept yourself without judgment”
Another way to view self-care and self-acceptance is self-respect. Give yourself the same respect you give others.
We aren’t always taught how to give ourselves self-acceptance or self-love. You can learn to take steps and rewire your brain for more self-acceptance.
Tips for Self-acceptance
- Check in to see how and what are you feeling.
- Acknowledge your feelings without judgement
- It’s unreasonable to expect yourself to be happy and positive all the time. We all have good days and not so great days, maybe even weeks. It’s part of our human experience.
- Accept your feelings – feelings just are – they are not good are bad – they are what makes us human.
- Take some time for yourself
- Even 5 min in the bathroom
- While taking your quiet moment – leave the devices behind so you’re not mindlessly taking quiet time.
- Take some time for deep breathing, doing a quick body scan, mindfulness, meditation, or prayer.
- Ask yourself what is the story I’m telling myself?
- We often have negative self-talk and self flagellate.
- What is the origin of this story?
- How is this story helping me or serving me?
- Is there anything I want to forgive, stop blaming or judging myself for?
- We all have mistakes and regrets – don’t let them define you!
- Stop holding grudges against yourself – ouch.
- What story do I want to tell instead?
- This is a means of positive reframe for that negative self-talk
- Check on the 7 types of self-care
- Is there one area that needs a little tender loving care for self-acceptance
- Lean into it and take one action today.
Self-acceptance is a journey. Keep working towards it. Notice when you start that negative self-talk barrage. Utilize the STOP technique to stop it and rewrite your self-talk.
Make a promise to yourself to accept yourself the way you are and work towards challenging negative thoughts and beliefs.
What does self-acceptance look, feel and sound like to you? How can you give yourself more self-acceptance today, tomorrow and in the coming year? I’d love to hear what how self-acceptance works for you?
