Transform your dreams into goals and reflect weekly!
Here's why this practice is so valuable and how it can transform your mindset and productivity.
1. Celebrate Your Wins
Life often moves so quickly that accomplishments, big or small, can go unnoticed. A weekly check-in is an intentional pause to recognize your victories. Reflecting on what went well boosts motivation, reinforces positive habits, and reminds you of the progress you're making, even when it feels slow. Learn more about the benefit and how to celebrate: Celebration: A Resiliency Skill
For example, completing a challenging project, resolving a tricky situation, or even maintaining consistency with healthy habits are all wins worth celebrating. Acknowledging these can build momentum for the week ahead.
- What went well this week?
- What made you feel proud, happy or accomplished?
- When did you meet or exceed your expectations?
2. Identify Challenges Without Judgment: What was Tricky?
Sometimes, the tricky parts of your week can weigh heavily on your mind. By setting aside time to assess these challenges objectively, you can turn frustration into actionable insights.
What was difficult? What made it feel that way? Were external circumstances, or were internal factors like time management or mindset involved? Get curious versus judgmental. Reflecting on these questions in a non-judgmental way helps you see these moments as opportunities for growth rather than failures. We can learn and grow from our challenges.
- What was difficult this week?
- What was tricky?
- What made it feel that way?
- What didn’t go as planned?
- What were my stressors, difficulties and/or, frustrations?
3. Learn and Adapt – Lessons Learned
One of the most valuable aspects of a weekly check-in is the opportunity to reflect on what you’ve learned. Growth often comes from both successes and struggles. By examining your week, you can pinpoint key gems of lessons learned:
- What did this week teach you about yourself or habits?
- Did a new approach yield better results?
- Did you uncover a gap in your knowledge or skills?
- Was there a breakthrough in how you handle stress or relationships?
- Did you gain new awareness or clarity?
In the 2025 Goals planner, there is a place to list new things you’ve learned. Learning is about growth.
4. Reflect HOW was the week in general
Taking time to review and determine how the week was in general is an important reflection. You may find the week wasn’t all bad after all. There may have been some ups and downs. You can see if there was a theme to the week, red/yellow/green, or give it a name.
Benefits of reflecting the week:
- It helps you step back from the day-to-day grind and look at the bigger picture of how things are going.
- Promote Self-Awareness: You get a better understanding of your feelings, achievements, and areas for improvement.
- Build a Growth Mindset: Reflection fosters learning and encourages you to embrace both successes and setbacks as part of personal development.
- Reduce Overwhelm: By processing the week’s events, you can offload mental clutter and gain clarity.
5. Set a Clear Intentions for the Week Ahead
A weekly check-in isn’t just about reflecting on the past; it’s also about looking forward. Use what you’ve learned to set a clear intention or focus for the coming week. This is where we can then use our lessons learned to propel us forward in the weeks ahead. It also helps keep us focused on our intentions and goals.
It’s a terrific time to pre-plan the week ahead so that your “big rocks” are on your calendar and get prioritized.
In the 2025 Goals planner, there is a place to for reminders for the next week on the weekly review page.
5. Reflect for Improved Mental Clarity & Emotional Well-Being
When thoughts and emotions pile up, they can create a sense of overwhelm. A weekly check-in serves as a mental and emotional reset. By organizing your thoughts and gaining clarity on your experiences, you’re better equipped to tackle challenges with a calmer and more focused mindset.
This practice can also reduce stress by providing a structured way to process emotions and frustrations. It’s a powerful way to take control of your mental well-being. Reflecting is good for us in many ways.
How to Get Started with Weekly Check-Ins
- Choose a Time: Find a consistent time each week—perhaps Sunday evening or Friday afternoon—when you can reflect without distractions.
- I prefer Friday afternoon so I can digest the current week and then set my next week up for a clear and quiet weekend. - Use a Framework: Consider simple prompts if you don’t have the 2025 Goals Planner.
- What went well this week? What are my wins?
- What challenges did I face or What was tricky?
- What did I learn? What new thing have I learned?
- What can I do differently next week?
- How was this week overall?
- What do I want to bring forward into next week?
- Write It Down: Keep a journal or digital document. Seeing your reflections over time helps you track patterns and growth. You may find that certain days of the week, meetings, people, events are more of a challenge. You may discover over time that January is a tough month for you like I have.
- Be Honest: The value of a check-in lies in its authenticity. Celebrate the highs, acknowledge the lows, and commit to learning from it all.
Checking in weekly is a small investment of time with significant returns for your well-being and goals.
