As I reflected the last year, I realized that by having a focus of 3 things and making that my vision board – 3 simple words I was able to stay focused and not get lost in the details of my typical go getter goals. I also have discovered many clients struggle with goals but resonate with intentions and have a more success with intentions then small micro goals to reach them vs. big vague goals.
What is setting an intention and how is it different than a goal?
An intention is creating a clear focused promise or commitment to yourself. It is how you want to Be or Feel. They are aligned with your values, needs and goals. They are the Why behind goals.
Goals are great and using SMART goals is a terrific way to reach your goals. Goals however are more of something you want to achieve or get to. They are the steps to achieve the intention.
There is nothing wrong with setting go getter goals and it is important to set them to make your dreams, wishes and intentions become reality. However, we can get lost in the goal setting and steps to achieve them details. Intentions can help you stay focused on the why and ultimate result.
I find that my energy and life has changed to where lots of detailed SMART goals no longer serve me. They actually keep me from getting to where I want to be. I get lost in the execution (ouch) of them and forget the why. I’m finding intentions with small SMART goals are working better for me. I also have coaches and others who support me in reaching my goals and keep myself accountable to the big why – my intentions.
ABC Intentions
This year as I reflected and asked the Universe what did I want and need for 2024 ABC rang in with clarity.
A = Abundance – plentiful in the good things in life health, prosperity, relationships, love, and whatever else comes along.
B = Balance – The condition where different elements are equal and/or equal proportions. Last time I had abundance as an intention, I burned myself out and was depleted. This time – abundance with balance thank you.
C – Contentment – a state of satisfaction – being content with what is. Happiness is momentary however; joy and contentment can be found in all situations.
How to set intentions
Setting intentions doesn’t have to be time consuming or hard. I noted some the journal or contemplation prompts in my previous articles
- Find a quiet place to contemplate or journal
- Ask yourself What do you Want?
- Ask yourself What do you really really want?
- Then listen & see what that is.
- THAT is your intention
- Take time to capture what that is – what does it feel like, who do you get to be, add rich detail to set the intention
- Write it on a post it note, your mirror in expo marker, your journal, a note on your device. I keep mine in my office where I’ll see it daily.
Here’s to setting your intentions. Utilize them as your anchor and motivator throughout the year. Look forward to reflecting at the end of the year and seeing how they turned out.
Do you set intentions, visions, goals? Do you have a word or phrase for the year? I’d love to hear what resonates for you and how you keep your focus on what’s important to you for the year.
