Having fun, expressing joy, playing, and humor are all terrific resilience skills.
Play has many benefits to us according to science:
- Play and having fun releases the happy hormones- endorphins.
- Endorphins relieve stress and can relieve/reduce pain.
- Simple regular moments of fun can also help reduce depression.
- Improve brain function
- Stimulate creativity
- Improve relationships
- Creatively solve problems
- Boost productivity
- Increase innovation
- Encourage teamwork
When you are having fun and playing it gives your brain a break - both mental and emotional. This can allow your creative side to reemerge.
Having fun doesn’t have to be big or expensive.
Think back to your childhood- what did you do for fun?
Read, swing, climb trees, build things, color, craft, play make believe, make a fort … or something else?
Remember what having fun and play was like? If not, you can visit with a young child that’s in your life. Grandchildren for me, nieces, nephews, a friend’s kid, maybe volunteer for a kid’s program. Kids are all fun and play if given the space and freedom to just be. Watch and enter into their world. It’s a blast and let your inner child play.
Here’s a quote to ponder: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” ~ George Bernard Shaw
