Independence and Freedom
A topic with much emotion around it these days. As a fiercely independent woman, I am feeling less and less independent as I’ve been sheltering in place since mid-March. It really is getting to me but, I’m grateful for all of the white privilege I have and 1st world problems I may whine about.
What does it mean to be independent?
The dictionary defines it as: not dependent:, not subject to control by others, not requiring or relying on something else not requiring or relying on others (as for care or livelihood) ~https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/independent
How is freedom defined? The dictionary defines it as: the quality or state of being free: such as: a: the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action, b: liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another (independence) ,c: the quality or state of being exempt or released usually from something onerous, d: unrestricted use, e: ease/facility, f: the quality of being frank, open, or outspoken g: improper familiarity ,h: boldness of conception or execution ~ https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/freedom
What are your thoughts after reading this?
I’m reflecting on these words and coming to terms that to be free and independent sometimes means personal sacrifice to be safe and healthy. To be free and independent isn't always easy.

I remember the first time I read the Declaration of Independence as a youngster in grade school. These words rung though my heart and still beat with it.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.“ https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/declaration-transcript
I asked my teacher if that included women or not. “Yes, of course, it includes everyone.” That stuck with me and I believed that statement and have fought for equality for ALL my entire life.
If we’re equal before God and our country then let us all bind together and be equal. Treating each other like the beautiful humans we are designed to be. This is a time of change, let’s make this a positive change for the future generations.
